★ ★ ★ ★ I started 12pm and returned to parking lot 4:50pm about 9 miles. ★ ★ ★
★ ★ ★ ★ Mt Lowe East Trail needs little scrambling, but beware of mountain bikers barreling down the steep portions. ★ ★
★
Most of Angeles National Forest is within an hour of LA and Orange County, and it feels like you are worlds away. During the government shut down there is a sign that the trail is closed, but there are no obstacles. ★ ★ ★
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bring water socks, sandals, or crocks. The way it starts out is kind of like you warm up the first mile, after that it gets pretty steep and the cardiovascular exercise starts and is followed by a gentle descend along Spunky Canyon Rd. ★ ★ I hope those that go on this trail will pack their trash out with them.

★ ★ ★ Mostly shaded trail. Arroyo Seco. It was sunny and hot and a pretty relentless climb to the summit. -Minus 33 merino wool LS 1/2 zip shirt

Covering over 700,000 acres, Angeles National Forest is located just north of Los Angeles, CA. ★ ★ ★ Recommended that you do this hike on a cool weather day.
This was a fun and easy hike to Big Horn Mine. ★ ★
★
★ As long as it’s not too hot out, this is an excellent hike.
I highly recommend hiking to Mount Hawkins at a minimum.
Take the Ford Observatory road as far as the memorial bench, or further to your liking.

★ ★ This has been the traditional route to access Mt Islip for years. ★
Look for the forest service road with the gate. ★ ★ Start checking them out and you'll be out on the trail in no time!NOTE: It has been reported that the entrance and road to the trail head can CLOSE if it gets too crowded, so please plan accordingly and try to go early. I hike this trail frequently, and not a single visit goes by where I don’t find myself picking up plastic bottles and other trash. ★ ★ ★ ★

★ ★ It’s a moderate climb through some beautiful oak forests. ★ This is a really nice well maintained trail that is easy to follow until you get to the top. ★ ★ Due to the COVID shutdown, the mountains are very popular on the weekends.
Wind from the Santa Ana winds made this more difficult on the true backbone. ★ As long as it’s not too hot out, this is an excellent hike.
It was rank! ★ ★ ★ ★ Steve G., Montrose Search & Rescue ★ ★
This route is the Lower San Merrill trail towards Lake. ★ ★ ★ ★ Although I'd give the trail only two stars, I gave it an additional star for the campsite. Trail washed out in spots. A decent trail for snowshoeing in the winter. ★
Excellent hike.
The snow is definitely contained in several patches and below 7,500' there was no snow. ★ ★
Great consistent gain from the creek wall the way to the saddle and then up to the peak ★ ★ ★ ★
★ Lots of graffiti and inexperienced hikers.
Kind of crowded. ★ ★ ★ The only thing that makes this difficult is a very steep climb near the end. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ No shade along trail. ★
I mean, yeah, it's a long walk of nearly ten miles and close to 3,000 foot elevation gain, but there's a very good trail and it's hard to get lost. ★ ★ ★ ★
