A bad movie can be terrific fun, especially when you add alcohol to the equation. You also play russian roulette as to the quality and professionalism of the supplier. It truly is a labor of love. MANOS Returns is the follow up film to the cult favorite Manos: The Hands of Fate, created by Jackey Neyman Jones who portrayed Debbie from the original film.Boy, the quality of Manos' wives has declined over the years.This is my movie so of course, I love it, duh! Or because the story was trying to be terrible. Those who say it was boring are missing the charm as well as forgetting the original.
Really, the mom is the only one who gets to do this: her character is now trapped in Manos' house, shifting in and out of reality, speaking to her mirror. The final results? It does pretty much everything wrong, but it has gained a cult following, mostly due to being presented on MST3K back in the day. The filmmakers have love for the material but can't bring it to life in more than a perfunctory way. You would have to take a calculated risk in ordering via Mano due to their low quality service and toothless response to complaints and even poorer service by their suppliers. Just go into it with the right expectations. It could've been awful, like the original--cheap, bad sound mixing, woeful acting--and I admit I would've drawn some enjoyment from that (I can't stay away from terrible movies), but instead it was a pleasant surprise. While it certainly isn't destined to be the cult classic it's predecessor is, Manos Returns does a more than admirable job expanding on the off-the-wall lore of the original film while keeping up a fun atmosphere and never becoming a parody of itself. There's a vintage Mustang convertible but everyone has modern clothing and phones. Intentional humor and unintentional horror ensue. It's like a first draft!
