The statue, commemorating his life and achievements, was unveiled on the centenary of St Brigid`s Church where Archbishop Duhig performed the dedication ceremony on August 9th 1914. He died there on 10 April 1965 and was buried in the vault of St Stephen's Cathedral. After undertaking his studies for the priesthood at the Irish College and Pontifical Urbaniana University, both in Rome, Duhig was ordained a priest in 1896 and his profile grew rapidly.Duhig played a major role in the development of the University of Queensland, being a member of the university senate from 1916 until his death in 1965.

The 27th Annual Archbishop Sir James Duhig Memorial Lecture will be held on the evening of Thursday, 7 September 2006. Most of his estate, valued for probate at £8052, was left to the Church. Committed to the separate education of all Catholic children, he provided for a primary school, run by nuns, in each parish.
